The silly season never disappoints

By

Though it’s been a while since I blogged up in here, I’m always wary of taking anything serious during the closed season or more accurately, the silly season.

In some ways I pity sports editors who have the unenviable task of producing copy to fill the tabloids when there’s pretty much nothing to say. The inevitably is the rehashing of absolute nonsense and hogwash, couple with sensationalist headlines to try and grab attention.

Take the Daily Fail for example suggesting that there’s a “Warning for Wenger: Arsenal Must Repay Investment in Youth with Trophies”

The first question you ask yourself is “Who is warning Wenger? Reading the article anyway then makes you wonder what the need for this stupid and sensationalist headline was about. Gazidis the Arsenal CEO was being interviewed by the Guardian and even the Sports fail reporters in their rehashing of a decent article from the Guardian couldn’t even point out in what way Gazidis (if it is him) provides a warning to Wenger.

But then again, what is to be surprised about. Space has to be filled in the tabloids before the start of the next season, and for sure, we’re in full mode with “silly season”.

Do these guys sit in a pub somewhere on Fleet Street and concoct nonsense just because their editors demand that they indulge in shit stirring in lieu of any decent football news?

And then there’s TV media who sit and read out this nonsense as if it was gospel.

Can’t wait for pre-season to start – really. Even the tired non-event matches in the bundux of the Austrian hills will do rather than have to face this silly season tabloid shit stirring.

I wonder who we’ll get for the champion’s league qualifier? And I want to see little Mozart back – we’ve missed Rosicky.
